When is the best time to travel in the Whitsundays?

As a slice of paradise in its own right, the Whitsundays is a glorified holiday retreat for world travellers who are eager to tick the ‘Great Barrier Reef’, ‘Heart Reef’, and ‘Whitehaven Beach’ off their bucket list. Ultimately, the Whitsundays is a great place to visit at all times of the year with each season suitable for holiday-makers who are wanting to have a memorable experience.

Below is a general outline of the weather throughout the 12 months.

January - March

Generally, the high travel season begins before January and runs through to the end of March. this is a popular time to visit with school holidays, and as it is a busy time, it is important to book your accommodation and tours well in advance. Though the days are generally longer and sunny, it is important to note these months also run through summer and constitute the ‘wet season’ so there is a more likely chance of rain and the possibility of cyclones.

  • The average temperature is approximately 30 degrees Celsius
  • Please note, the period runs through the stinger season

April - June

With weather cooling off and school holidays as well as the Easter period, this is also a great time to holiday in the Whitsundays. We tend to find all type of people holidaying in the region at this time, including families, couples, honeymooners and groups of backpackers who want to experience a north Queensland autumn and winter period.

  • The average temperature is approximately 24 degrees Celsius
  • Please note, the period runs through the stinger season

July - September

With migrating whales heading to the region and cooler, sunny days, this is a busy time in the Whitsundays. Whale season is certainly a drawcard for many travellers who want to have a first-hand encounter with a whale and this is also a popular time for events in the Whitsundays including Hamilton and Airlie Beach Race Week. With school holidays also falling into this time period, we recommend booking in advance. Winter also has its clearest days during this season.

  • The average temperature is approximately 23 degrees Celsius
  • The Whitsundays is a popular spot for migrating whales to visit and halve calves

October - December

With school holidays and the festive season upon us, October through to December certainly kick starts the busy period in the Whitsundays and advanced bookings is a must. With slightly warmer, longer sunny days this is the perfect time for a Whitsundays sailing trip. This is a great time to holiday with the family, your friends or your partner with the town of Airlie Beach bustling with a great atmosphere for Christmas and New Years.

  • The average temperature is approximately 28 degrees Celsius
  • December is generally the beginning of the wet season
