Whitsundays Weather: What is it like today?

Updated Tue 02 Jan 2024

Weather in the Whitsundays is a topic of conversation for every traveller, especially those stepping aboard a local boat for an exploration of all that the gorgeous Whitsundays has to offer. While the tropics are notorious for storms and severe weather systems, the Whitsundays region is subtropical and a relatively sheltered area protected by the islands and the Great Barrier Reef. It's the ideal place to enjoy beautiful weather all year-round.

The Whitsundays enjoy a warm tropical climate of seemingly eternal summer. Summer and spring experience sunshine, balmy evenings and days suited to bikinis and board shorts. Summer is also the wet season with occasional tropical storms and moderate rainfall, meaning in between the days of heat and sunshine, you'll get to enjoy the beautiful tropical rain. This always makes it a great season for enjoying waterfalls and swimming holes in the area, which will run with abundant freshwater after summer storms. Autumn and winter enjoy cool evenings and gloriously warm, bright sunny days, with winter being the driest and mild season. Evenings are cooler and ideal for relaxing after a day in the sun. Located at the same tropical latitude as Hawaii and the Bahamas, the Whitsunday Islands boasts weather perfect for beachside holidays, water sports or once-in-a-lifetime overnight sailing tours.

Year round, the Whitsundays enjoys an average temperature of just over 27 degrees Celsius (81 degrees Fahrenheit). Average temperatures during summer months (December, January, February) are around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) and during winter months (June, July, August) the temperature reaches 25 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit). Most importantly, water temperatures generally remain an inviting 25 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year, great for splashing, snorkelling or diving. So dive in and with snorkel or scuba gear discover the wonders of the underwater world!
