While much of Australia cools down over the winter break, the Whitsundays stay delightfully mild. It’s the perfect weather for snorkelling, island-exploring, lagoon swims, and action-packed boat days. Here’s everything you need to know about spending the winter school holidays in the Whitsundays.

When Are the Winter School Holidays?

The winter school holidays typically fall between late June and mid-July, though the specifics vary from state to state. In the Whitsundays and the rest of Queensland, the winter school break usually spans for two weeks, beginning in late June. For 2025, Queensland winter school holidays run from 28 June to 13 July. Other states and territories have similar break periods. This year, they are as follows:

  • New South Wales: 7 - 18 July 2025

  • ACT: 5 - 21 July 2025

  • South Australia & Western Australia: 5 - 20 July 2025

  • Northern Territory: 23 June - 11 July 2025

  • Tasmania & Victoria: 5 - 20 July 2025

The staggered dates mean that the Whitsundays typically get a steady flow of holidaymakers across several weeks. As a result, it’s highly recommended that visitors book their tours, accommodation and other activities in advance - especially families looking to secure spots on the most popular tours and experiences!

Why visit the Whitsundays for winter school holidays?

There couldn’t be a more idyllic time to visit the Whitsundays than during the winter school holidays. Visitors can take their pick of once-in-a-lifetime tours and activities in this dreamy corner of Queensland, all while enjoying the region’s best weather of the year. Here are just a few reasons why the Whitsundays is at its best in the winter.

Perfect weather conditions

While more southern states are feeling the winter chill, the Whitsundays bask in warm temperatures all through the season. With the wet season well and truly over, humidity levels drop, so the Queensland heat is comfortable, and the rain subsides, so the underwater visibility is exceptional for snorkellers and divers.

Stinger season ends

The end of wet season also means the end of stinger season, so visitors can safely enjoy the pristine, turquoise waters without donning head-to-toe stinger suits! In general, the chances of being stung by a jellyfish in the Whitsundays are very slim, but if you're concerned about stingers, it's best to ask your experienced boat crew, who will be able to advise you according to the winds and conditions.

Whale season in the Whitsundays

Most importantly, winter in the Whitsundays coincides with whale season! From June to October, hundreds of whales migrate from Antarctica up the east coast of Australia to enjoy the Whitsundays climate. At this time of year, it’s very common for visitors on sailing tours or private charters to spot humpbacks frolicking in the warm, tropical waters with their calves, making for an unforgettable adventure!
