The top 10 things to do in The Whitsundays for backpackers

To help you plan your perfect visit, we’ve created a Top 10 Things to Do in the Whitsundays for Backpackers list - plus essential travel tips and budget hacks below!

Best Backpacker Sailing Tours

10. Visit Whitehaven Beach

This 7km stretch of pure silica sand and turquoise water on Whitsunday Island is one of the most photographed beaches in the world - and for good reason. The swirling sands of Hill Inlet are best viewed from the lookout at low tide, offering a surreal, dreamlike landscape that looks like a painting come to life.

Whitehaven Beach is only accessible by boat, but there are plenty of affordable day trips and overnight sailing tours from Airlie Beach that include this iconic destination. If you’re on a tight budget, a half-day tour is a great value, while overnight tours give you more time to explore and catch those low-tide views.

9. Explore the resort islands

Think luxury island resorts are off-limits to backpackers? Think again! With regular ferries from Airlie Beach to places like Daydream Island and Hamilton Island, you can enjoy white-sand beaches, pools, hiking trails, and marine life - even just for a day. Look out for free walking trails, affordable lunch deals, and island happy hours to keep things cheap.

8. See the Reef from the air

One of the best ways to experience the Great Barrier Reef is from the sky. Scenic flights and helicopter tours from Airlie Beach offer unbeatable views of this natural world wonder, including the famous Heart Reef, a naturally formed coral formation shaped like a perfect heart.

Some areas of the Great Barrier Reef are protected and can’t be accessed by boat, so seeing them from the air is the only way. While it’s a little bit of a splurge for backpackers, the experience is unforgettable and perfect for special occasions or getting iconic travel content!

7. Dive or snorkel The Great Barrier Reef

The Whitsundays are a gateway to some of the best snorkelling and diving in Australia. Whether you're a first-timer or a certified diver, you'll get the opportunity to explore thriving coral gardens, reef fish, turtles, and maybe even a reef shark or manta ray!

Many overnight sailing tours include snorkelling gear and guided reef snorkels. Some also offer intro dives, complete with full instruction and safety briefings. If you're already certified, consider joining a dedicated dive tour for deeper reef exploration.

Hoping to get scuba certified in the Whitsundays? Consider joining an overnight sailing tour like Summer Jo 3D3N, which has dedicated dive instructors as part of its crew who can help you get your Open Water or Advanced scuba diving certificate, all while exploring the stunning Whitsunday Islands!

6. Hike The Whitsunday Great Walk

Take a break from the beaches and explore the lowland tropical rainforest at the Conway State Park.  The Whitsunday Great Walk is a 27km trek through ancient rainforests, volcanic peaks, and native bushland teeming with Aussie wildlife. You don’t have to do the full track - shorter loops and lookouts like Honeyeater Trail offer incredible rainforest views. Best of all? It’s completely free and a great way to get some steps in between boat parties and beach days!

5. Skydive!

Calling all adrenaline junkies: skydiving over the Whitsundays is a once-in-a-lifetime thrill you don't want to miss out on. Jump from up to 15,000 feet and experience jaw-dropping views of the islands, reef, and coastline. Airlie Beach is one of Australia’s top drop zones, and you'll even land just steps from the ocean.

It’s not the cheapest activity - but if you’ve budgeted for one major experience, this is it. Plus, you’ll get epic GoPro footage and an unbeatable profile pic!

4. Take a spin in a tuk-tuk

Looking for a quirky way to explore Airlie Beach? Book a tuk-tuk tour! These eco-friendly rides are a fun way to see the town, cruise along the foreshore, and learn local secrets from your driver. It’s a cheap and cheerful alternative to expensive taxis or car hire.

3. Visit Cedar Creek Falls

Just 30 minutes from Airlie Beach, Cedar Creek Falls is a lush natural swimming hole tucked between the rainforest and granite cliffs. It’s free to visit and best seen after rainfall when the waterfall is flowing strong, though the pools remain swimmable year-round. Pack a picnic, bring your swimmers, and don’t forget your camera - this is a hidden gem you’ll want to brag about!

2. Check out the local lookouts

The hills around Airlie Beach offer epic views for hikers and photographers. Some must-do lookouts include:

  • Honeyeater Lookout: A rewarding 2.5km uphill hike with panoramic rainforest and coastline views.
  • Coral Beach Lookout: A scenic trail near Shute Harbour that ends at a coral-strewn beach overlooking the Whitsunday Passage.
  • Mount Rooper Lookout: Great for sunrise or sunset, with sweeping island views and native bush.

Most lookouts are free to access - just bring your water, plenty of sunscreen, and sturdy shoes.

1. Visit Bowen & Horseshoe Bay

About a 45-minute drive north of Airlie, the coastal town of Bowen is famous for fruit picking (hello, working holiday visa holders!) and gorgeous beaches. Horseshoe Bay is the crown jewel of Bowen, boasting clear waters and awesome snorkelling straight off the beach. There are hiking tracks nearby, delicious dining spots, and plenty of space to chill. It’s the perfect budget day trip if you have a car or can tag along with a group.
