What's the weather like in the Whitsundays today?

Located at the same tropical latitude as Hawaii and the Bahamas, the Whitsunday Islands boast weather perfect for beachside holidays, water sports or once-in-a-lifetime sailing tours

Daytime temperatures typically range between 22°C and 32°C depending on the season, with higher humidity and rainfall in the summer months (between December and February). Summer is also the wet season with occasional tropical storms and moderate rainfall, meaning in between the days of heat and sunshine, you'll get to enjoy the beautiful tropical rain. Meanwhile, the winter months (June, July, and August) are more dry and mild, with cooler evenings.

For the most accurate, up-to-date conditions in Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays today, we recommend checking the Bureau of Meteorology.

What to wear in the Whitsundays today

The Whitsundays' tropical climate means it's best to dress light and be sun-smart - no matter the time of year. On most days, we recommend:

  • Lightweight clothing (like linen or breathable cotton)
  • Swimwear for beach or snorkelling activities
  • Sun protection (sun hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen)
  • Light jacket or windbreaker

It's also a good idea to have a hoodie or fleece on-hand during the winter months - especially if you've booked an overnight tour, as the evenings can get a little bit cooler out at sea.

Is it safe to go sailing in the Whitsundays today?

Sailing in the Whitsundays is usually calm and enjoyable thanks to the mostly predictable weather and the sheltered waters that are protected by the islands. That being said, it's always better to be safe and check the weather conditions ahead of your sail. Before heading out on the water, it's a good idea to look at:

  • Wind conditions: Depending on the type of boat you've booked, wind speeds over 20 knots can affect comfort or cause cancellations.

  • Storm warnings: Tropical storms and cyclones are rare, but are most likely to occur during the warmer summer months. Always check the BOM marine forecast.

  • Stinger season: Stinger season in the Whitsundays runs from October and May. To protect against marine stingers, it's important to wear a stinger suit when swimming or snorkelling.

If you've booked a tour, rest assured your boat crew are experienced and will cancel or adjust plans if conditions aren’t suitable. It’s rare, but always worth checking your emails or contacting your tour company before departure during wild weather.

Can I sail in the Whitsundays if it's raining?

In most cases, yes! You can still go sailing in the Whitsundays if it’s raining. Light rain or overcast skies won't impact the safety or enjoyment of a day out on the water. The warm tropical climate means even rainy days are often warm and relatively calm, so boat tours will still go ahead. Light showers or cloudy skies won’t affect the water visibility for snorkelling, or conditions for sightseeing - in fact, some guests prefer cooler, overcast days for added comfort and less sun exposure.

Tour operators continuously monitor marine forecasts and will cancel or reschedule trips only if there are strong winds, storms, or unsafe sea conditions. If you're unsure whether your tour will run, check your email the night before or morning of your trip, or contact your tour provider directly. And don’t forget to bring a light rain jacket or poncho - just in case! No matter the weather, the Whitsundays’ natural beauty, marine life, and relaxed atmosphere make it a destination worth exploring, rain or shine!
