Day trips from Airlie Beach to the Outer Reef

It's about 3 hours by boat from Airlie Beach to the Outer Great Barrier Reef, so there are a few day trips that make the journey! Most day trips to the Outer Reef will be powerboats as sailboats generally won't have time to get out there and back in one day with snorkel time for guests. But these powerful boats can take you to the Outer Reef and back to Airlie in one action-packed day!

  • Cruise Whitsundays - Spend the day snorkelling or diving on an Outer Reef Pontoon

Private charters from Airlie Beach

A private charter is another convenient way to see the Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach. Private charters give you freedom and flexibility at sea with customisable itineraries and a knowledgeable crew. You also don't have to share your boat with any other travellers, and you can possibly find secluded reef sites with few crowds.

Not all private charters visit the Outer Reef, particularly for day charters with time restrictions. Overnight charters and powerful boats like superyachts are more likely to make the journey to the Outer Reef. You'll have to enquire about which boats visit the Outer Reef, but our travel agents are available 24/7 to answer your questions!

Great Barrier Reef scenic flights

You can also admire the Great Barrier Reef on a scenic flight from Airlie Beach! You won't be able to land on the reef and go snorkelling or diving, but it's still a fascinating experience to see the corals from the air. This is also the only way to see the famous Heart Reef! Most scenic seaplane or helicopter flights are only about an hour, so you can easily do both a flight and a boat tour or charter during your Whitsunday itinerary. You can even book fly and cruise packages that include boat tours and a flight!

Should I visit the Outer Reef from Airlie Beach?

The Outer Reef is definitely worth a visit from Airlie Beach, but if you're short on time, the inner fringing reefs are just as stunning! Avid scuba divers may prefer the deep waters of the Outer Reef, and there are lots of amazing experiences to be had out there. But if you only have time for a day trip, you may prefer a trip that combines Whitehaven Beach with snorkelling in the fringing reefs.

The fringing reefs showcase wide varieties of colourful corals and still have lots of tropical fish and sea turtles. Snorkelling can be incredible around the Whitsunday Islands, and these inner reefs are much closer to shore than the Outer Reef. So definitely try to see both if you have time. But if you're on a tight schedule and you still want to see Whitehaven Beach, the inner Great Barrier Reef is just as beautiful as the Outer Reef.

Is it better to go to the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns or Airlie Beach?

Passionate scuba divers often consider Cairns to be better for visiting the Great Barrier Reef than Airlie Beach. The Outer Reef is much closer to shore in Cairns than in Airlie Beach, and there are more accessible reef sites near Cairns. Cairns also has a wider variety of reef day tours and liveaboards for snorkellers and scuba divers.

But Airlie Beach is better for island scenery! The Whitsunday Islands combine tropical island paradise vibes with the Great Barrier Reef. If you're more interested in beaches and islands, Airlie Beach may be better for you. Cairns has islands as well, but the Whitsundays are world-famous. So you can visit islands and the Great Barrier Reef in both places! Cairns is better for Outer Reef trips and scuba divers, whereas Airlie Beach is better for gorgeous island getaways and a bit of snorkelling or diving mixed in.
