Langford Island Spit Reef
Langford Island is a pristine and uninhabited island in the Whitsundays that has a fringing coral reef ideal for snorkelling! Langford Island Spit Reef may be small in size, but it is brimming with sea life and is a must-visit destination when staying in the Whitsunday Islands. Found in the north-western corner of the Whitsunday Islands National Park, Langford Reef is just a stone's throw from Hayman Island and northern Hook Island. While there, you can easily see the beautiful resort island, which is just across from a small bay. Langford is one of the more secluded spots in the Whitsundays making it perfect for escaping the crowds and enjoying the beautiful marine life.
More About Langford Island and Reef
Langford Island features a long sand spit that all but disappears at high tide. It is one of the more defining features of the island and it stretches for several hundred metres at low tide and is perfect for beach picnicking, swimming, and sunbathing. The soft sands are a perfect place to hang out in between snorkelling, which you can do right off the beach.
The fringing reef surrounding Langford Island contains a large number of small and colourful fish species, which hang out around the bommies that have formed around the spit. A bommie is a cluster of coral that forms in a column and is great for exploring, as you are able to swim around them and see them from all angles.
The many fish species that live here call these bommies home. At Langford Spit, snorkellers will find an abundance of underwater gardens to explore, and more often than not, be able to spot a turtle or two! Turtles like to hang out here and are always an amazing sight to see while enjoying the warm blue waters. This is a great place to swim alongside them while in the Whitsundays!
