When ‘Cyclone Debbie’ hit Airlie Beach on March 28th 2017, she brought with her strong winds which stormed through the town and surrounding areas. While Airlie Beach is bouncing back, continuing on with business as usual, it has sparked a debate about the long-term effects this natural disaster will have on the reef system.

Tropical Cyclone Debbie passed through the Whitsundays on March 28, 2017, as a category four cyclone. It was the strongest tropical cyclone since Cyclone Ada in 1970, almost 47 years ago, causing damage to the Whitsundays and surrounding areas before heading south, where it would caused some flooding near Rockhampton. Considering modern building codes are so stringent the main damage was to vegetation and water penetration to some unoccupied buildings.

Following damage from Cyclone Debbie in March 2017, Daydream Island Resort and Spa has decided to use this time to start the major refurbishment that was due to start in 2018. This $50 million redevelopment will inject new life into the Whitsunday Islands, with a state-of-the-art accommodation and facilities.


Solway Circuit hiking trail on Whitsunday Island

The Solway Circuit is a hiking trail located on beautiful Whitsunday Island in Northern Queensland, famous for being the home of Whitehaven Beach. The trail itself begins behind the beach, and gives it guests a beautiful view of Solway Passage, Pentecost Island and Haslewood Island. It’s a 1.2 kilometre one-way circuit that’s part of the Ngaro Sea Trail which is also found on Hook and South Molle Islands and sheds light on the traditional owners of the Whitsundays, the Ngaro.
