What is a bareboat charter?

A bareboat is a self-skippered vessel, meaning you’ll be the captain (or bring one along) of a boat that comes fully equipped with everything you need to sail, sleep, cook, and relax. Whether you're chasing sunsets on a private couple’s vacation or seeking a unique family getaway, here's a breakdown of what’s included in a Whitsunday bareboat charter, so you can hit the water feeling prepared and excited.

Who is a bareboat charter best for?

First of all, it's important to decide if a bareboat charter is right for you. There are lots of different ways to sail the Whitsundays, from overnight sailing tours to private charters to day tours. A bareboat charter is best for travellers who are keen to take the reins and explore the Whitsunday Islands on their own schedule. It's ideal for those who have some previous sailing experience or for groups travelling with someone who is confident behind the helm. With the ability to choose your own route, set your own pace, and drop anchor wherever the mood takes you!

If the idea of a bareboat charter feels a little overwhelming, or like more work than you were hoping for, we recommend booking a private charter instead. Enjoy the comfort and privacy of your own boat, but with a professional crew onboard. Take a look through our private day charters from Airlie Beach to get started.

The vessel

Of course, your bareboat charter begins with the vessel itself. Bareboat catamarans are modern, spacious, and designed with relaxation and functionality in mind. With multiple private cabins, indoor and outdoor lounge areas, and plenty of deck space for sunbaking or stargazing, they’re perfect for families, couples, or small groups looking to share an idyllic sailing experience. There’s also plenty of storage space throughout the cabins and saloon areas, so your bags, groceries, and gear can be neatly tucked away as you settle into life on the water. Navigation and safety gear

When you’re out exploring the Whitsundays, it’s important to feel confident and well-prepared, and your bareboat will come fully equipped with the essential navigation tools and safety gear to help you sail with peace of mind. Your bareboat vessel will include modern GPS and chart plotters to help you stay on course, along with up-to-date marine maps and sailing guides covering the Whitsunday region. Before you depart, you’ll also receive a thorough briefing so you know exactly where to go, where to anchor, and how to make the most of your time on the water.

Naturally, your vessel will also be fitted with life jackets, fire extinguishers, flares, and first aid kits. A VHF marine radio is also onboard, so help is always close by if you need it.

Extras and equipment

Depending on the vessel you choose, your charter may also come with some fun extras that will make your sailing adventure even more memorable. For example, it's likely your vessel with come with a tender (or dinghy) with an outboard motor, which you can use to zip between your boat and the shore.

Snorkelling gear is also provided on most vessels, so you can dive straight into the reef and explore the vibrant underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Other handy additions might include a deck esky for keeping drinks cool or a BBQ setup so you can grill dinner with a view.

Some charters may even offer optional add-ons like stand-up paddleboards or kayaks. Be sure to check with your booking agent in advance to find out about additional amenities that you may like to have for your charter.

What is not included in a bareboat charter?

While your bareboat comes fully equipped for a comfortable and self-sufficient holiday, there are a few extras that aren’t included in the base price - along with some optional upgrades that can take your trip to the next level. Food and drinks aren’t supplied, so you’re free to stock up on exactly what your group enjoys. Don’t feel like shopping? No worries. Catering packages can typically be requested at an additional cost.

As mentioned earlier, a skipper and crew are not included a bareboat charter. The direction and itinerary will be entirely up to you or someone in your group. In the Whitsundays, a boating license is not required in order to bareboat a vessel, however guests will be required to undergo a briefing before departure.
