Required certifications for working at sea
If you're hoping to get a job on a tour boat in the Whitsundays and you have no prior experience, you'll first need to get your recreational boat licence and a first aid certificate. These qualifications will put you ahead of other applicants and make you a confident deckhand.
Most deckhands are required to drive tenders on their tour vessels. To do that, you'll need to secure a Coxwain Grade 1 certificate. Once you've got a good feel for life at sea, you can climb your way up the ranks with more certifications. Before you know it, you could be a captain!
