Hollywood meets the Whitsundays! The Whitsundays region has added another movie title, Ticket to Paradise, to an already extensive list of blockbuster films that have been shot on the silica sands and turquoise waters of the Whitsundays Islands in Australia.

Directed by Ol Parker (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), local and international viewers of Tickets to Paradise will be left in awe of the picturesque backdrops of the Whitsundays' numerous islands and tropical waters.

Academy Award winners George Clooney and Julia Roberts star in the blockbuster that tells the story of a divorced couple travelling to Bali together to attend their daughter’s wedding. The pair aren't thrilled with their daughter's decisions to marry so young and on a whim they create a plan of attack to prevent the wedding from going through. The star-studded romantic comedy is set to leave the audience with warm hearts and an inspiration to travel again, post pandemic.

Crews from Universal Pictures constructed Balinese-style huts on the beachfront shores of Long Island, Palm Bay Resort to stand in for a Balinese film set, where the blockbuster was originally set to be filmed prior to COVID-19. Long Island is located near Whitsunday Island, home to the world-renowned Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet.

The popular Queensland getaway has become a beloved tropical destination for film studios to shoot. Action comedy Fool’s Gold (2008) starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), and most recently, the Netflix film, Spiderhead (2022) starring Chris Hemsworth, are amongst an ever-growing list of blockbusters filmed in the Whitsundays region.

Ticket to Paradise

The Ticket to Paradise production received $6.4 million from the Australian Government under the successful Location Incentive Program, as they announce that the film is likely to inject approximately $47 million into the Australian economy.

Filming of the blockbuster in the Whitsundays region was welcomed with open arms by the Whitsundays community, whose marine tourism industries was severely disrupted by the pandemic. The film is also set to encourage Australians to explore their own back gardens and re-ignite bucket lists of international travel!

Younger cast members of Ticket to Paradise, Billie Lourd (American Horror Story star and daughter of Carrie Fisher) and Kaitlyn Dever (Last Man Standing star) spent time outside of filming exploring the region, playing golf on Dent Island and relaxing by the pool on Hayman Island.
