Is Hamilton Island Good For Snorkelling?

Hamilton Island has amazing snorkelling, whether you're looking to snorkel right off the island's beaches or book a tour to the Outer Reef. The Whitsunday Islands are part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which can be separated into the Outer Reef and the Inner Fringing Reefs. Hamilton Island, like the other surrounding islands, are home to the fringing reefs which grow off the edges of the island landmasses.

There are lots of beautiful places to snorkel in the fringing reef around Hamilton Island. Catseye Beach is the most accessible spot, as you can rent snorkel gear right on the sand and simply stroll into the calm, turquoise water. Coral Cove and Hidden Bay are other more secluded snorkelling spots, but these are recommended for experienced snorkelers in a group as there are no lifeguards here.

Is it safe to swim in the ocean at Hamilton Island?

Yes, it is safe to swim in the ocean around Hamilton Island! However you should be aware of stinger season, which runs from November to May in Tropical North Queensland. During these months, jellyfish inhabit the waters of northern Australia which can make swimming a hazard. But they are tiny, and all you have to do is wear a stinger suit to protect your skin! If you wear a stinger suit during stinger season, then it is perfectly safe to swim around Hamilton Island year-round.
