Cruise ships are back in the Whitsundays! During the pandemic, cruise ships ceased travelling through the region. Now that we are on the other side, the cruise ships are well and truly back in action! For the remainder of the year, cruise ships will be constantly coming and going from Airlie Beach, carrying bucketloads of keen travellers eager to see what the Whitsundays are all about! 

The Whitsundays is a popular tourist destination for backpackers, families, grey nomads, “vanlifers”, and cruise goers. The region is widely known as the gateway to the world famous Great Barrier Reef and the 74 tropical Whitsunday Islands. The main hub in the region is Airlie Beach, a vibrant town with a plethora of things to do. From browsing through charming boutiques to booking JetSki tours to trying out the local cuisine from a wide array of world-class restaurants, you won’t be bored in Airlie Beach!

To welcome these boats filled with travellers, the Airlie Beach Market has extended their opening days, with an array of eclectic and colourful food and homewares for visitors to browse and enjoy! 

Volunteer Cruise Ship Ambassadors

The Volunteer Cruise Ship Ambassador Program involves volunteers from all over the Whitsundays welcoming cruise ship passengers upon arrival and departure in Airlie Beach. The volunteers gather at the Port of Airlie or Coral Sea Marina to give passengers a warm and friendly introduction to the Whitsundays. They are full of knowledge and happy to share facts or information about the region with passengers. Not only do the volunteers provide a warm welcome, they also see the passengers off!

The meet and greet volunteer program is unlike any in Australia, in fact it is the only one in the country that greets and farewells cruise ship passengers on a one on one basis. Usually, per event, 15-20 volunteers dedicate their time to ensuring cruise ship passengers have a great time in the Whitsundays.
