Whitsunday Islands flight cairns and rockhampton COVID tourism skytrans campaign

Good news neighbours! New flight paths from Cairns and Rockhampton to the Whitsundays will be introduced from 13 September 2021 as a part of the new Skytrans campaign. The Skytrans campaign is aimed at stimulating the Queensland tourism economy and encouraging local travel for Queenslanders as statewide COVID restrictions ease. This means that Queenslanders from Cairns and Rocky can travel to the Whitsundays as seamlessly and quickly as possible… forget those “are-we-there-yet” family road trips!

As Whitsunday Coast Airport rapidly expands its routes, the Whitsundays is ready to welcome Queenslanders in need of a holiday in their own backyard! As the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays and Airlie Beach are spectacular destinations abound with unique natural wonders, pristine waters and local history.

With the help of the Council, Whitsunday Coast Airport, Tourism and Events Queensland and Whitsunday travel organisations, small local businesses can’t wait to see an influx of travellers in our wonderful corner of the coast, particularly after the dire impacts of COVID travel restrictions

With marketing through social media, radio and digital and static mediums, the whole region is excited to see this expanding intrastate travel and connection between our neighbours. The new flights will be operating from Monday to Friday, and offer over 33 thousand more passengers into the Whitsundays each year.

Alan Milne, the Skytrans Executive Officer, is just as excited and optimistic to see travel and tourism expanding and recovering from such a tough two years.

“We’re a Queensland owned company and it’s fantastic that we are flying to even more destinations across our great state,” said Milne.

“The big winners will be locals who live in Cairns, the Whitsunday region and Rockhampton because they will have additional choice and we are committed to delivering the best service possible for these local communities.”

Deserted Whitehaven Beach Whitsundays

As the Whitsundays continues to operate under capacity due to COVID-19, there are plenty of incredible deals and deserted island paradises waiting to be enjoyed. Indeed, there has never been a better time to escape the crowds and discover the wonders of the Whitsundays. The Great Barrier Reef is teeming with flourishing, biodiverse ecosystems and marine life, and the bays and beaches nestled amongst tropical islands have never sounded more appealing.

No trip to the Whitsundays is complete without a journey out to the Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet Lookout… the stunning white sands and incredible marinescapes are simply breathtaking! Indeed, after the unpredictable years behind us… we all deserve a restful escape!
