Yes, the Airlie Beach Lagoon is chlorinated, keeping the swimming spot clean for everyone to use! The water in the Airlie Beach Lagoon consists of saltwater and chlorine, and also goes through a filter process, resulting in a super fresh swim even with the number of visitors taking a dip every day.

It's one of the favourite destinations of visitors as it is a self-chlorinated man-made lagoon that holds almost 5 million litres of fresh water and measures 4,300 square metres, attracting about 500,000 travellers every year!

Now, it might be your first time travelling to Airlie Beach and if you’re wondering if the Lagoon is worth dipping yourself into, our answer is yes! Let’s talk about what’s in the Lagoon for you!

Airlie Beach Lagoon

Did you know that chlorinated water is often cleaner than other types of natural bodies of water, depending on its Ph levels? Well, what’s really cool about the Lagoon is it’s lightly chlorinated, so it doesn’t sting or irritate your eyes like other pools usually do. The rest of the cleaning is done by natural salt and filtering processes. But what visitors love the most about it is the fact that it’s the only pool of its size that’s open and completely free for the public... without the usual public pool ick factor!

Where is the Airlie Beach Lagoon?

The Airlie Beach Lagoon is perched right next to the ocean at 275 Shute Harbour Road at the heart of Airlie Beach! You get a spectacular view of the Coral Sea within the Whitsunday Islands as you indulge in a refreshing plunge. It was built in January 2001 and ever since has become an iconic location that highlights the combination of both natural and man-made features that add to Airlie Beach’s unique flair!

Airlie Beach Lagoon Opening Hours

Depending on the time of year you’re visiting, the Lagoon has different operating hours every season:

  • During the winter season from June to August, it’s open from 05:30 AM to 7:00 PM.
  • During the summer from September to May, the Lagoon stays open from 05:30 AM to 9:00 PM

The Lagoon is patrolled during opening hours by lifeguards. Outside of opening hours, the lifeguards are not on duty and the pool is guarded by security, so you can't go for a dip outside of hours!

What does the Lagoon Look Like?

The Lagoon is divided into 2 sections and in between, there’s a bridge that connects the two areas. On one side, it’s shallow and non-swimmer friendly. So, if you have kids swimming with you or simply want to float and sunbathe, this is where you should hang out!

On the bottom side is the deeper section, so grab your mates and take a relaxing swim, with plenty of room for an ample number of people to have fun and chill out!

How Deep is the Airlie Beach Lagoon?

The Lagoon starts with white sand and gravel on one edge that’s safe and shallow for kids to swim in. Then it slowly progresses to 1.5 metres (5 feet) towards the centre. The deeper area of the pool, designed for adults and keen swimmers, increases to 2 metres (6.5 feet), perfect for laps and hanging out with new mates!

The Lagoon is designed for all types of swimmers. Plus, a team of highly attentive and friendly lifeguards are on duty from 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM looking out for you! There’s also an infant pool specifically designed for the little tots where they can splash around in their own carefree environment!

Is the Airlie Beach Lagoon Heated?

During the summer, the lagoon isn't heated as the hot Airlie days are enough to keep it at a refreshing temperature. However, during the winter, the lagoon is comfortably heated for visitors like you, so you can indulge in a warm, relaxing plunge where you can soak yourself all day to your heart’s content!

Although all of our Sailing Whitsundays tours provide all the wetsuits, stinger suits, snorkelling gear and scuba diving equipment you need, you don’t have to worry about the stinger season because the Lagoon is a protected area. You can strut in your bikini, swim, relax, or laze under the sun on a comfortable floater with drinks in your hand, carefree!
