Fishing the Whitsundays

With its exhilarating reef fishing, island edge drop offs and scattered bommies, the Whitsundays is hot competition when it comes to choosing Australia’s top fishing destinations.

And with the close proximity to the outer Great Barrier Reef, 74 Whitsunday islands and calm, azure waters, Airlie Beach is a playground filled with endless fishing spots - the ideal attraction for an avid angler hunting for the perfect catch.

And the town of Airlie Beach is well-equipped to deal with the thousands of travellers who visit the region wanting to head out on the water, with around 5 different fishing charters operating daily. These all vary price depending on the type of trip provided.

Targeting the different markets, you are bound to find a tour suitable for families, couples or a boys trip, heading out around the islands, estuaries and the reef. The region also has a number of public boat ramps, all accessible around Airlie Beach for those who have towed their own vessel and these are located Airlie Shute Harbour, Port of Airlie and Abell Point Marina.

And, for estuary fishing, head to the Conway Beach boat ramp to access the Proserpine River which is known for its saltwater crocodile and barramundi population as well as mangrove jack and salmon. Or if you're into fresh water fishing, the Proserpine (Peter Faust) Dam is a must as a well-known place for its freshwater barra. Please note that you require a permit.

Before heading out however don’t forget to visit the local fishing shops which will have everything you need; including tackle, ice, bait, rods, reels and lures. There are 2 different fishing stores in Airlie Beach, Cannonvale and one in Proserpine. These stores may also help with locating a good fishing spot and local experts know the restricted and non-restricted fishing zones around the islands and reef.
