Cyclone Debbie makes work in the Whitsundays
While Cyclone Debbie caused damages in the Whitsundays, including Hamilton Island, Hayman Island, Daydream Island and Airlie Beach, the silver lining is that there is now plenty of work to go around.
Trade workers and labourers have flocked to the Whitsundays, hoping to do their part in the post-Cyclone cleanup. Work is being done on all the islands as well as the mainland, with cleanup and maintenance at the forefront. Truckloads of debris and vegetation have been carted off the islands and out of Airlie Beach, all at the hands of labourers who now have plenty of work to go around.
Each day two boatloads of trade workers head across the Whitsunday Passage to work for the day on Hamilton Island, where they will continue to fix both the resorts and privately owned homes. Others work on the other islands, Airlie Beach and even the surrounding areas. They are being called the sail-in, sail-out workforce, and the Queensland Building and Construction Commission have set up a registry of licensed tradespeople who are available to help with repairs in the area. Insurance companies, locals, trade workers and tourists alike have come together to pull the area back together in the wake of the storm, with many places already back open and ready for business.
