Five Hidden Gems in the Whitsundays
1. Whitsunday Pavilion
You probably haven’t heard of it, but it is certainly a place to visit in Airlie Beach! The Whitsunday pavilion is a Balinese-style hut situated on the point of Airlie Beach, overlooking a perfect view of the Coral Sea, and is surrounded by tropical palm trees. The Whitsunday Pavilion, is owned by the Whitsunday Sailing Club, is actually a popular wedding and event venue, however it is also open for the public to visit and take photos. Just a short walk from the Airlie Beach Main Street, head towards the Whitsunday Sailing Club and you are sure to spot this lovely hut!
2. Coral Beach
It is a moderate walk (around 1.5 kilometres each way) through National Park to reach this lovely beach, which is actually overlayed with coral. Appearing to be made completely out of broken corals, the beach stretches some way, has some shade and offers a lovely view out to the Coral Sea. The walk to the beach is pleasant and full of native flora and fauna, creeks and forestry.
3. Peter Faust Dam (Lake Proserpine)
If you have a vehicle, it is a worthwhile drive (approximately 45 minutes) to Peter Faust Dam, the main water source for the Whitsundays township. Featuring smooth fresh waters perfect for watersports, the man-made landmark is also famous for its Barramundi fishing and redclaw! With great barbecue and picnic table facilities as well as a boat ramp, Proserpine dam is a popular family location and fishing competitions.
4. Airlie Beach Lagoon
Situated right in the middle of the Airlie Beach main street, the lagoon is the most popular public swimming area in the Whitsundays. This large and modern lagoon is surrounded by soft sands, tropical palm trees and shaded cooking facilities and tables and chairs. It features a bridge and smaller swimming area for children. Nearby, there is a ping pong table and playground equipment. There is also lifeguards on duty throughout the day at the area.
5. Cedar Creek Falls
Another landmark which requires a vehicle to get too, but certainly shouldn’t be missed, is Cedar Creek Falls. This naturally-formed waterfall flows almost all year and is great to see in the wet season. Another great location for a picnic or a dip in the fresh water. Surrounded by bushland and flowing in a winding creek, Cedar Creek Falls is a lovely sight when it is flowing and can be quite deep. You can sometimes spot goannas, small creek fish and turtles at the sight.
