Airlie Beach Foreshore Renovations
The Whitsundays will be getting a new foreshore in the upcoming months. Construction is to begin in mid-2018 where the aim is to improve and upgrade the foreshore between the Sailing Club and the Lagoon along the main street of Airlie Beach.
The foreshore is well known for beach-goers, sunbathers and swimmers who hang out at the main beach in Airlie Beach and enjoy the waves and sand. It has BBQ areas, a playground and plenty of space for hanging out and relaxing. It is also known for the weekly markets which are open Saturdays from 7am - 1:30pm, and on days that cruise ships come to town, which set up along the foreshore in front of the beach and down the boardwalk area. During the construction, the market will be relocated as there will be work ongoing in the area during the duration of the project. To accommodate for their relocation, the Airlie Esplanade will be closed between the Main Street roundabout and the Coconut Grove on market days from 4am - 2pm so people can safely enjoy the marketplace and what it has to offer. The closure will affect all traffic aside from emergency vehicles and stall operators.
While the closure may be inconvenient during the renovations, it will result in an improved and updated foreshore for locals and visitors to enjoy. The aim is to add a number of improvements to the foreshore including 65 extra car parks, 120 market stalls, a new playground, a sound stage, festoon lighting, landscaped gardens, new trees and shrubs, a wide pedestrian path, new picnic tables, drinking fountains, bike racks, charging sessions, a basketball court, shaded areas and BBQs. The big project will cost almost 7 million dollars and add a new and improved section of Airlie Beach for all to enjoy.
