Planning a Whitsunday Holiday
Like planning any holiday, there are a few things which must be taken into consideration in the lead up to your Whitsundays getaway; things such as dates, weather, budgets, transport and accommodation as well as what you may actually like to see and do while you are on your break.
After you have decided that the Whitsundays is the place to spend your dream holiday, it is good to follow a checklist to ensure your holiday is stress-free and free-flowing, so all you have to do is relax.
We have put together a checklist to help get your Whitsunday holiday underway!
Planning a Whitsunday Holiday Check List
1. Choose your dates
The best way to ensure you get enough time in the region and do the trips of your choice is to have flexible dates. All overnight sailing trips have different departure days and limited availability at certain times of the year so it is important to have some flexibility so you are not as limited.
2. Decide what type of trip you want
Are you looking for a party, fun, backpacker boat or more of a quiet relaxed trip? Do you want to scuba dive or happy with lots of snorkelling? Do you want a private cabin (based on 2 people sharing) or happy with shared/open plan accommodation? Do you have a budget in mind?
These are the questions your travel consultant will ask you to help find the best overnight boat trip for you. The Whitsundays has around 30 different overnight sailing trips so it is important to think about what type of trip is for you.
3. Pack for the season
The Whitsundays offers great weather almost all year round, however, it is still important to pack for the occasion. Sunsmart clothing, a hat, swimmers and comfortable, light clothing are necessary while on the boat as well as a jumper (during the cooler seasons) and a spray jacket (during the wet season). It is also important to note that you will only be permitted to take a small overnight bag on the boat trip and you will store the rest of your luggage in Airlie Beach during your time on the water. 4. Book early
Because of its great weather, the Whitsundays is a tourist destination throughout the year so booking well in advance is a must to avoid missing out, especially the most popular overnight trips, which book out months ahead of time. It is also a good idea to inquire early about accommodation and flights to the region to get the best deal!
5. Book flights
There are 2 airports in the Whitsundays; the Whitsunday Coast (Proserpine) and Hamilton Island Airport which serves the main airlines. We recommend choosing the Whitsunday Coast Airport which is logistically easier to get to and from (just a short drive to Airlie Beach). The Hamilton Island Airport, on the other hand, requires a ferry transfer to and from the mainland. We also recommend booking your boat trip in conjunction with your flights in case you need to be flexible with departure dates, as well as arriving in town the day prior to your overnight sailing trip (in case of any flight delays etc).
