Mystery Box Rally Comes To Airlie Beach 2024
Hordes of dolled-up wagons, cars and trucks passed through the seaside streets of Airlie Beach one fine August afternoon this 2024. Many locals and visitors were left wondering, “What on Earth is going on around here?!” when they saw the colourful and clanky parade of old cars cruising along.
Well, Mystery Box Rally, founded by the creators of Shitbox Rally, were behind this cantankerous display of bright cars and it’s all in the name of cancer research.
This five-day event lasted from 16 to 21 August 2024, with participants not knowing where they were heading until the morning of, ensuring a surprising adventure each day!
Car Shenanigans For Cancer Council
As the ninth Mystery Rally, Airlie Beach locals and out-of-towners alike are stoked to have a drive around town knowing all money raised is going to Cancer Council Australia. In fact, the sizable funds raised by Mystery Box and Shitbox Rallies in the past make them the leading singular contributor to Cancer Council nationally. That's $48.3 million and counting raised across Australia from these events!
The funds raised through the rally directly support crucial research, patient care, and cancer prevention initiatives. The event highlights the power of community and shared goals in making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer, while also raising substantial funds and increasing awareness for this important cause.
Mystery Box Rally Cars 2024
The 2024 Mystery Box Rally in Airlie Beach saw 170 old cars and 340 participants put on their driving hats and hit the roads! So what makes a car Mystery Box-ready? Let’s dive, or should I say drive, in!
To be a participant in the Mystery Box Rally, you must be driving a car 25 years old or older at the time of the rally, with no AWD, 4WD, buses, vintage or veteran cars permitted. As such, this event attracts a lot of old (but not old in that expensive vintage way), decorated and unique vehicles with many drawing inspiration from movies, TV shows and book characters!
Spotted were cars themed to the Flinstones, Where’s Wally, Dukes Of Hazard, Despicable Me Minions, Old Macdonald and Apollo 11, providing something for the whole family!
A chance to check out a lineup of quirky cars with colourful and imaginative decorations, The Mystery Box Rally rolling into Airlie Beach was a real treat for the locals.
