Flying to the Whitsundays

Updated Wed 03 Jan 2024

The most frequent questions asked usually involve logistics with travelling to the Whitsundays before and after an overnight sailing trip.

There are a few important things travellers should note BEFORE booking flights and a sailing trip:

  1. There are 2 airports you can fly into; Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast) or Hamilton Island Airport.
We recommend looking at flights in the Proserpine Airport as it is situated close to Airlie Beach (around 40 minutes) and is logistically easier to get to and from. If you prefer to fly into Hamilton Island Airport, you will have to get a ferry to/from the Airlie Beach mainland. Ferries run frequently (and take approximately 1.5 hours) and must be booked directly with Cruise Whitsundays.
  2. Sailing boats CAN NOT pick up/ drop off guests at any of the islands.
All trips depart and return to Airlie Beach only. Boats are not permitted to access any Whitsunday island marina. Please consider this when determining which airport to fly into.
  3. All trips will depart and return at their scheduled times.
Unfortunately, the boat trip cannot wait for passengers who are running late. Though travellers may prefer to fly into the region on the day of their boat trip, we strongly recommend arriving in Airlie Beach the day prior to your boat trip and departing the day after. We also encourage all travellers to obtain travel insurance.
