Daydream Island after Cyclone Debbie

Daydream Island Resort and Spa was one of the Whitsunday Islands affected by Cyclone Debbie on 28 March 2017. The island is 1km long and 400m wide and is home to one resort that operates over the entirety of the island. It is a family-friendly island that has been a go-to for locals and tourists alike boasting swimming pools, mini-golf, a spa, several restaurants and a living reef within the island complete with sharks, rays and clownfish.

Daydream Island

Following Cyclone Debbie, which was a category 4 cyclone, Daydream Island announced it was to remain closed in the wake of the storm. Management already had plans to refurbish the island in 2018, and so have opted to move forward these plans to combine both cleanup and renovations in order to maximise their use of time, The refurbishment, which is said to cost $50m, will bring the island up to a 4.5 star standard and plans to be open and operating for guests in the middle of 2018. The refurbishment will include significant improvements on major infrastructure, including accommodation, existing attractions, and the installation of new features, such as a new Asian themed restaurant. Areas that will be involved in the redevelopment will including the arrivals pavilion, atrium, reception, Waterfalls restaurant, Lagoons bar, Mermaids Restaurant and Lovers cove. All room types will also be upgraded.

Cyclone Debbie took its toll on all the Whitsunday Islands as well as the mainland and Airlie Beach. Daydream Island is the smallest resort island in the Whitsundays with most damages occurring mainly to its jetty, which is the main access point for the island, as well as vegetation, trees and the iconic trio of mermaids that sit out in front of the island. It has since begun its road to recovery and plans to come back to “its spectacular best” where guests can once again enjoy its beauty during their stay in the Whitsundays.

Previously made bookings that are affected by the Cyclone are to be refunded by Daydream Island’s reservations team or by your own booking agent. The team is said to be expecting a high volume or calls and emails, but will be in contact with all guests who will be affected by the cyclone.
