6 Things You Must Do in the Whitsundays

Hill Inlet, Whitsundays

1. Experience your first scuba dive

The underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is something that must be seen up close to be appreciated – so why put on an oxygen tank and go exploring! You are able to experience your first scuba dive one many overnight and some day tours for as little as $65. This is the best way for both certified and beginner divers to experience the magic of the Great Barrier Reef.

2. Step foot on Whitehaven Beach

We’ve said it before but we will say it again – this beach is amazing! Whitsunday Island is the home of Whitehaven Beach, and most tours make sure to include this amazing beach in their itinerary. The beach is best appreciated from Hill Inlet Lookout which is just a short bushwalk from the beach. You can also take the chance to soak in some sun rays, wade in the shallow blue ocean or enjoy a stroll along the seven-kilometre stretch of silica sand.

3. Fly over Heart Reef

Yes, this small reef which is part of the outer Great Barrier Reef has been naturally formed into the shape of a heart, making it the most romantic spot in the Whitsundays. Jump on an hour-long scenic flight that will take passengers over the Great Barrier Reef, Heart Reef, Whitsunday Islands and more.

4. Have a beer in an Airlie Beach pub

The village-like town of Airlie Beach has a certain reputation for being a bit of a party town and therefore has a large variety of bars, clubs and pubs to suit everyone’s taste. The best way to experience this is to take a stroll down the main street and check out all the bars for yourself! Among the most popular is the beer garden at Magnums, Paddy Shenanigans, Beaches and Breeze Bar.

5. Take a dip in the Airlie Beach Lagoon

Airlie Beach itself has plenty of things to keep every traveller amused on a rest day, and if you are wanting some rest and relaxation than the best place to head to is the Airlie Beach Lagoon. Located off the middle of the main street, the lagoon is a large saltwater swimming area, surrounded by sand and tropical palm trees and overlooks the Coral Sea. There is ample room for sunbaking or retreating from the sun in the shade. The area has public showers and toilets and undercover barbecue areas. The lagoon is great for children and is patrolled by lifeguards.

6. Experience real sailing

As a sailing mecca, a tour to the Whitsundays wouldn’t be complete without a real sailing adventure. Our recommendation is to jump on board an overnight sailing trip. There are heaps to choose from – from maxi sailing yachts, relaxed sailing catamarans, party vessels and more! All overnight sailing trips include the crew, all meals, accommodation and activities including snorkelling. They also offer the chance for passengers to have a hands-on sailing experience while helping the crew set the sails and pull the ropes, or just sit back and relax and enjoy the surroundings.
