When is the Best Time to Travel in the Whitsundays?

Updated Fri 07 Oct 2022

As a slice of paradise in its own right, the Whitsundays are a picturesque holiday retreat for world travellers who are eager to tick the ‘Great Barrier Reef’, ‘Heart Reef’, and ‘Whitehaven Beach’ off their bucket list. Ultimately, the Whitsundays are a great place to visit at all times of the year with each season suitable for holiday-makers who are wanting to have a memorable experience.

Below is a general outline of the weather throughout the 12 months of the year.

January - March

Generally, the high travel season begins before January and runs through to the end of March. This is a popular time to visit with school holidays, making it one of the busier times of the year for families and holiday-makers. And as it is a busy time, it is important to book your accommodation and tours well in advance to ensure you are able to enjoy your vacation to the fullest. Though the days are generally longer and sunny, it is important to note these months also run through summer and make up the ‘wet season’ so there is a more likely chance of rain and the possibility of cyclones.

  • The average temperature is approximately 30 degrees Celsius
  • The summer runs through the stinger season

April - June

April - June will see the weather cooling off, more school holidays and the Easter period, making this is another great time to holiday in the Whitsundays. We tend to find all types of people holidaying in the region at this time, including families, couples, honeymooners and groups of backpackers who want to experience a North Queensland autumn and winter period.

  • The average temperature is approximately 24 degrees Celsius
  • Please note, the period also runs through the stinger season

July - September

With migrating whales heading to the region and cooler, sunny days, this is a favourite season among locals. Whale season is certainly a drawcard for many travellers who want to have a first-hand encounter with a whale and this is also a popular time for events in the Whitsundays including Hamilton Race Week and Airlie Beach Race Week. With school holidays also falling into this time period, we recommend booking in advance. Winter also has its clearest days during this season.

  • The average temperature is approximately 23 degrees Celsius
  • The Whitsundays is a popular spot for migrating whales to visit and raise their calves

October - December

With the festive season upon us, October through to December certainly kick starts the busy period in the Whitsundays and advanced bookings is a must. With slightly warmer, longer sunny days this is the perfect time for a Whitsundays sailing trip. This is a great time to holiday with the family, your friends or your partner with the town of Airlie Beach bustling with a great atmosphere for Christmas and New Years.

  • The average temperature is approximately 28 degrees Celsius
  • December is generally the beginning of the wet season
